Today, we’re taking you on a journey to explore six must-visit late-night spots in Taichung. These eateries are hidden gems we’ve discovered during our nearly four years of living here, and we hope you’ll enjoy them as much as we do!
1. Zuchuan Braised Pork Rice
Located on Hankou Road, Section 2, Zuchuan Braised Pork Rice is a 24-hour restaurant specializing in braised pork. The key to their success is the pork, which is braised with 18 different Chinese herbs, a nod to the owner’s background in traditional Chinese medicine. Their signature Bak Kut Teh soup is light and flavorful, perfectly complementing the tender, gelatinous pork belly served over rice. Don’t miss their braised assortment platter, featuring items like tofu, eggs, and peanuts, which go well with rice or rice noodles.

2. Nantun Xiao Braised Pork Rice
Nantun Xiao Braised Pork Rice is a well-known spot in Taichung, with another location in Beitun Zhongqing. Their braised pork rice strikes a perfect balance between fatty and lean meat, with the braised sauce and pickled mustard greens making every bite irresistible. Their pickled mustard greens and pork stomach soup is also a must-try, with tender pork stomach free of any off-putting odors—a personal favorite of mine. The combination of braised pork rice and this soup makes for an ideal late-night meal for many food lovers.

3. Luzan
Located in Shui Koutou Night Market on Xitun Road, Section 3, Luzan serves up a delicious pairing of braised pork rice and stewed cabbage, offering two distinct textures in one bowl. Their pig’s blood soup is especially heartwarming, making every visit feel like coming home. Alongside braised pork rice, they offer a variety of side dishes like braised dried tofu and seaweed, all of which make great companions to your meal. Luzan is budget-friendly, with generous portions, making it a perfect spot for students and family gatherings.

4. A Dou Bo Frozen Taro
Located on Chenggong Road in the Central District, A Dou Bo Frozen Taro is a food cart that specializes in frozen taro, which is soft and full of flavor. Their toast, available in butter and strawberry flavors, also comes highly recommended; I’m particularly fond of the strawberry version, which has a nostalgic appeal. Besides desserts, they also offer snacks like tofu pudding and red bean soup, perfect for cooling down and quenching your thirst. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with the owner’s enthusiastic service making each visit special.

Located on Fuke Road, Xuanyuan Xiao Long Bao offers the perfect combo of juicy soup dumplings and hot and sour soup. The dumpling skin is thin, with plenty of broth inside, bursting with flavor. The loofah soup dumplings provide a refreshing contrast, especially when paired with their ginger strips and spicy soy sauce. This place offers great value for students, making it a tasty and affordable option. With long operating hours from evening to late night, it caters to diners at any hour.

Located on Hankou Road, Xiaoming Soup Dumplings serves thick-skinned dumplings that are chewy with a pleasant wheat flavor. The filling, made of pork and scallions, is juicy and delicious. Pairing these with the shop’s chili sauce and hot and sour soup enhances the dumpling experience.
